Family Science Night at the Library Incredible Success!

Feature image.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007 from 6:00-8:30 p.m., hundreds enjoyed a night of science and journey through the universe at the Johnson County at the Central Resource Library! Kids, teens and their families will met local scientists and astronomers, and got a close-up view of the awesome things they discovered. They learned about wild and wacky science through hands-on activities, and picked up some ideas to discover the science all around you in your own home! Activities were geared towards K-12th grade. Featured exhibitors included Dr. Jeff Goldstein, NASA astrophysicist; Dr. Ron Barrett, KU aerospace engineer; and John Fleischman, author of Phineas Gage and writer for the American Society for Cell Biology. Reading Reptile had books for purchase and autographing. We look forward to seeing you and the Science Night at the Library! See some great pictures from the event!

Join the Winter Bird Feeder Survey

The Winter Bird Feeder Survey began as a cooperative local effort between the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and the Kansas Ornithological Society, to census birds at feeders throughout Kansas. The survey started in Kansas, January of 1988. During the 2002 survey the project expanded to everyone in the United States who would like to participate. Data is gathered by hundreds of volunteers, who watch their feeders and count birds on two, of four designated days, that visit their backyards or school feeders, in January of each year.

Data and maps are available to anyone who is interested in the natural world. Want to participate? Learn more? Visit the PathFinder Science Winter Bird Feeder Survey Web site.

KC Science, INC site is live

The official KC Science, INC Web site is now live at http://www.kcscienceinc.org. The beta-version of the site will focus on the upcoming events, science-related and partnership news, and information about science-related careers. Phase two of site development will result in a graphically appealing, highly interactive Web site that encourages exploration and natural curiosity. In addition to the basic information of events, metro science spots, and information about the KC Science, INC partnership, we are planning to develop the site menu around the 5 content areas: Below the Surface, Earth, Water & Sky, Energy, Force & Motion, Design & Invention, and Wildlife & Nature. A phase 2 content and design plan will be submitted to the partners for final approval by the end of February, and development will occur throughout the spring and summer, with an antipicated launch in August 2007.
