Accessibility Guidelines

It is the policy of the Johnson County Library that all information published on the library Web sites shall be accessible to all users. The library has adopted the access standards of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and therefore all Web pages containing information that are built, updated or revised after the effective date of this policy must comply with Section 508 requirements. Section 508 establishes only a minimum standard for accessibility and Web pages; developers are encouraged to go beyond the minimum whenever possible.

Browser Support

The Library’s Web pages have been tested in the following browsers:

Older browsers are not guaranteed to be fully functional; Netscape 4.0 and older are text-only supported.

The Library Web site incorporates JavaScript in some of its enhanced features, so it is highly recommended to enable JavaScript in your browser.

Other Web Browsers

The Library Web site is accessible to text-only readers such as PDAs and mobile devices and is also organized for the JAWS screen reader technology. In this environment an accessibility menu links to key components of the Web page providing user mobility: world menu, domain specific menu, page content, search box, and the accessibility statement.

Web site Markup

This is made possible through the use of standards compliant CSS with structured XHTML code. Percentages were used to define element sizes such as font to keep them flexible for different screen sizes and viewing needs.

Color and Images

Minimal use of color or modification of standard web colors (i.e. underlined blue text to represent a hyperlink) was applied only as a graphical enhancement and not for purposes so color blind, low vision, or the blind would not lose anything of their experience. Any images on the site have textual descriptions and long descriptions if the image is detremental to understanding the content of the page.

Pages were built to keep file size small for quick download time. For pages with several links or thumbnails, download time may increase due to metadata or external files needing download.
