First Robotics 2010 Greater Kansas City Regional

Prehensile-tailed Porcupine
KANSAS CITY ZOO - A male and a female Prehensile-tailed Porcupine have created quite a stir in their new exhibit at the Tropics at the Kansas City Zoo.
Climbing from end to end exploring and hanging upside-down by their tails, these stout barbed mammals use their tail for grasping branches and bare soles (callused pads) for tree climbing.

BIG Bug Invasion . . .

Powell Gardens is thinking big this summer. The 930-acre botanical garden east of Kansas City is hosting Dave Roger’s Big Bugs exhibit as well as showcasing a variety of supersized fruit and vegetables in its Heartland Harvest Garden. How big? The largest of the gargantuan bugs (made from all natural materials) stands 25 feet tall, while others have a wingspan up to 17 feet wide. These will be placed throughout the gardens, where staff members hope to grow a 700-pound winter squash, a 200-pound watermelon, a 100-pound pumpkin, 3-foot-long cucumbers, 30-inch-long noodle beans and sunflowers with 2-foot-wide flower heads. Celebrate Groundhog Day Zoo-style with Spike the hedgehog! Tuesday at 10 a.m., Spike will emerge to see if he sees his shadow.
Spike the Hedgehog is one of the Zoo’s Education Ambassadors. And, for his second year, he is going to appear from his “hibernation” to celebrate Groundhog Day. With the assistance from Randy Wisthoff, Zoo Director, Spike hopes he will not see his shadow so perfect Zoo-weather will be in sight and the end of winter is near.

Kiss & Tail is an adults-only Valentine event Saturday, February 6 at the Kansas City Zoo. It’s a pre-Valentine’s warm up that will bring on extreme “belly laughs” and a bit of blushing. Kiss & Tale share the intimate facts on the love lives of the Zoo's permanent residents – the animals.
