BIG Bug Invasion . . .

Powell Gardens is thinking big this summer. The 930-acre botanical garden east of Kansas City is hosting Dave Roger’s Big Bugs exhibit as well as showcasing a variety of supersized fruit and vegetables in its Heartland Harvest Garden. How big? The largest of the gargantuan bugs (made from all natural materials) stands 25 feet tall, while others have a wingspan up to 17 feet wide. These will be placed throughout the gardens, where staff members hope to grow a 700-pound winter squash, a 200-pound watermelon, a 100-pound pumpkin, 3-foot-long cucumbers, 30-inch-long noodle beans and sunflowers with 2-foot-wide flower heads. Prehensile-tailed Porcupine KANSAS CITY ZOO - A male and a female Prehensile-tailed Porcupine have created quite a stir in their new exhibit at the Tropics at the Kansas City Zoo.
Climbing from end to end exploring and hanging upside-down by their tails, these stout barbed mammals use their tail for grasping branches and bare soles (callused pads) for tree climbing. www.kansascityzoo.org
Momtourage--Sensational Stories and Silly Snacks
June 10, July 8, August 12 3:30-4:00 Come inside and out of the heat and join us at Bedtime Books (151st and 69 Hwy by Jalepenos). Momtourage will share a different story each week and demonstrate a silly and nutritious snack that ties into the theme of the book. There may even be a craft some weeks.
